Pregnancy loss support

Pregnancy loss is a very difficult experience for anyone. The experience can cause short- and long-term psychological effects, no matter which stage of pregnancy the loss occurred.1

More than half of women and birthing people (55%) who experience spontaneous miscarriage experience depression, and around 18% report anxiety. In those who experience recurrent miscarriage, severe depression can affect 10% of couples, and 40% of couple also report high stress levels. The number of prior miscarriages and available social support can be risk factors for depression and anxiety in couples experiencing recurrent miscarriage.1

Therefore, seeking support and communicating with healthcare providers about any negative feelings is really important for maintaining good mental health and overall wellbeing.

There are also mental health networks available that may be able to provide you with additional support to your healthcare provider.

Looking after your wellbeing should be a priority during pregnancy loss. Some small self-care practices may help, these include:

Limiting alcohol consumption, as it is associated with exacerbating depression and anxiety2,3
Regular exercise2,3
Regular eating habits, and maintaining a balanced diet2,3
Meditation and breathing exercises3
Stay connected to friends and family2

If you have thoughts of suicide, or feel like you are in immediate danger of harming yourself please reach out to a healthcare professional, crisis line or trusted friend or family member.2
